“By faith” – The only way to please God

“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.”

—Hebrews 11:8 NKJV

We don’t think enough about verses like these. Abraham was a wealthy nomadic tribal leader. He had no need to move from Haran. Everything he needed he had, all the power he needed he possessed. Wealth, power, cattle, slaves… he was a nomadic king.

His experience with the living God was so transformative that Abraham picked up everything and just left. Abraham and everything he owned traveled in a direction he had never ventured, to a land where no one knew his name, his reputational power stripped, venturing with all his family and herds towards a destination he sensed but could not see. All in faith. Risking everything… wealth, possessions, stature, family, and life itself to pursue a vision God gave him. I’m sure his family thought him crazy. I’m sure they tried to talk him out of it. They expected him to fail, like so many who haven’t personally heard from God frequently do.

Abraham was convinced. It was hard work, it took years of struggle and effort and change. But we are here today telling his story because God always provides for those who trust His faithfulness and it’s that radical faith that will resound as a testimony for all eternity.

Be willing to risk all at the direction of a faithful God. We are almost at the very end of time. What we do now will resonate forever. Now is the time for bold, appropriating faith and now is the time for radical, committed obedience to our King and Messiah.
